HTML or no?

Postby tricianeill » Mon Sep 18, 2006 9:10 pm

Hello -

We are currently trying to load our products database to our new store - and it keeps getting corrupted according to our hosting service, and therefore the pages won't link.

They say that the reason is that we are using HTML characters in the NAME field (ie. 36&quot;x24&quot; Jacquard <br> Rug) - and have said if we stop doing this, it will work from now on.

On shopsite help, it says: under product database upload fields:

Name - The name of the product.

Field Type:
Short Text

Default Value:
No default; you must set a value

Possible Values:
You can enter any text for the name of the product, including HTML tags

Also - we are using dashes in the SKU field - they say that could cause db corruption as well...

Has anyone ever heard of this? We just upgraded to version 8 - and I don't have that much experience with it...

I figured that Shopsite's software documentation would be pretty well tested, but my hosting service seems to disagree with the functionality of the product.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Our store has been down for three days now, and we are desperate...even worse, I talked my customer into using Shopsite over Miva (a product they were already using) at the beginning of this project - because I swore up and down it was a zillion times better, and now I can't get it to work correctly...:(

Thanks,

We've used dashes in the SKU field before with no problems, but we didn't have spaces and dashes. We'd use ABC-1234-567 type skus.

Have you tried testing removing the HTML from the product name field and see if it will upload? It's just uploading to a database, and I would think it would just be limited to a certain number of characters.

I'd suggest removing the HTML characters and testing to see if it works okay. If so, add the HTML characters back a stage at a time. First add the <br> tags, see if it works. Then add the special characters.

If anything's getting you, it's probably the special characters. I have a client who adds <br> and font tags to his product names all the time without much problem. Of course, they're not running v.8 so I'm not sure if that's a problem or not.
