Typical CPU time for a full regen / reindex?

Postby ryan@ddm » Tue Aug 22, 2006 3:14 pm

SS 8.1.2 Pro on Solaris/SPARC.
Approx 1500 products and 100 pages.

Full regen/reindex took approx 5:45 of CPU time to execute to completion, measured using top.

Can anyone comment if this sort of performance seems reasonable? High? Low?

That seems a bit high for that number of pages/products. How long did it take in regular time? Is the server/VPS you are on slow in general for any cgi activity? Is it overloaded?

Also note that just the number of pages and products is not the only factor. For example, for indexing you have to consider the number of fields that you have set to be indexed and the amount of data in those fields. For the page generation there are template considerations, the more complex your template the more time it will probably take to generate each page or product (although on a fast server this is probably negligible). Etc.

I don't use any custom templates in my store; just the stock Top Notch template.

I'm on a Verio VPS Solaris Pro:
http://verio.com/vps-solaris-pro/
As such, I don't really have much insight into the actual load on the server...

I ran another test regen / reindex on my two stores (mirrors / sisters of each other; identical except for item prices; sync'd with the Shopsite sync utility), both of which are on this server:

Store 1:
top CPU time: 2:45
real-world time: just over 9 minutes

Store 2 :
top CPU time: 4:40
real-world time: 16 minutes

In both cases, generate.cgi was ranging from around 3% to 40%usage in top

One thing I did notice during the publish - the item numbers in store 2 are getting REALLY high - over 9,000 (even though the number of actual products is around 1500. Could this be an issue with the sync module / database which is slowing things down?
