Shipping charge options

We would like to offer free basic shipping if a customer spends a given
amount, say $50. We also want them to have the option of upgrading shipping
and paying the difference for the upgraded option (so the shipping charge
would be reduced by the amount of basic shipping). We are using Version 8
Pro and so far I haven't figured out a way to make that happen.

Any ideas?

You can give free shipping when they spend over X but there is no way to
reduce another option by whatever the basic amount would have been.

(I guess technically the other shipping options would be reduced by the
amount of the basic shipping since that would now be 0 for this order)

How is your shipping calculated? By currency? By weight?

If you are calculating shipping based on currency (total amount of product
dollars) you could have a shipping table with various levels for each
shipping method such as

Media Mail Priority Mail
up to $ 15 $3 $ 5
up to $ 25 $5 $ 8
up to $ 50 FREE $ 8 (reduced by whatever your
normal price is for Media Mail)
up to $ 75 FREE $ 10 (reduced by whatever your normal
price is for Media Mail)
up to $100 FREE $ 12 (reduced by whatever your normal
price is for Media Mail)
etc.
