There are 2 ways coupons can be used.
1. The link method you refer to will always place the coupon into the
shopping cart. In the shopping cart there is a continue shopping button
that can be used to direct the shopper to your home page.
2. The coupon code method. With this method you issue a coupon code to
the shopper and when they enter the code on the shopping cart screen the
coupon is applied to the cart.
Using the either message you sould put a comment with the link or code
to tell the shopper how to use the coupon.
For example for the link method: Click on the following link to place
the coupon in your shopping cart and then click the "Contine shopping"
button to be directed to the store page where you can select your choice
of products" <CLICK HERE>
Or for the coupon code method: Click on the following link to see ourt
"Specials page where you can select your favorite items. Place items in
the shopping cart by clicking on the "Add to Cart" button. In the
shopping cart enter "Special" in the coupon code box to receive a 20%
discount on these items:
Note that coupon links can be placed anywhere html is allowed so you
could have the coupon link on the page where the items are, on a banner
ad, in an email or even in the shopping cart itself. You can also add
special links in the shopping cart that take the shopper directly to the
page showing the item to which the coupon applies.

I have created a coupon that applies to 14 items.
However, when you click on the link, it takes you to a completely empty
shopping cart page. And there is no indication to the customer what to do
next.
How is the customer supposed to proceed?
I would much rather that the link take the customer to the page with the 14
items on it.
