Allow Out Of Stock Items To Be Ordered

Postby extragear » Sun Oct 24, 2010 5:16 pm

We use shopsites built in Inventory Tracking. This works well. But what I would like it to do is allow the customer to place the item with zero inventory in the cart and order it. Rather than being prevented from ordering it. We currently have our more info template to have a icon indicate whether its instock or back order.

Is there some trickery that could be deployed to achieve this? Perhaps using one of the product extra fields? And is there a way to append the worked On Back Order to the products name. Note we have many products with subproducts.

Thanks

If you do not set an Out Of Stock Limit for a product, then it can still be ordered even after the inventory goes below 0.

Loren

Thanks. What I am looking for is a little more elaborate.

I tried what you suggested and its part way there.

What I would like to do also:

1. Have a message also appear indicating the item is on back order when its added to the cart. Much like the message you would see if you left 0 as the out of stock limit.

2. Have the term Back Ordered, appended to the product name as it appears in the cart.

Is this possible in theory? Telling me how to do, would certainly be a bonus.

Thanks

1. You could probably use one of the custom text fields to indicate a back order product and then add some JavaScript to the cart to check that field and if it contains the backorder display a message box.

2. There is no way you can append anything to the product name because that value comes from the database and not the add to cart link. You might however be able to add it to the Order Option text field by specifying it as the input value for freeopt text area. See an example of using this field in the help on http://www.shopsite.com/help/10.0/en-US/sc/pro/custom.template.spec-product.html In the [-- Product.OptionsBox --] tag description. You could make it a hidden input field in the form and it will display in the cart in the text box.
