i can't figure out if i need to set the ssl between the customer and my shopsite cart, or if the ssl needs to be configured between shopsite and authorize.net.

SSL Security Settings are found under Preferences > Hosting service in your ShopSite back office. Did you already purchase a certificate for your site, or does your hosting company offer a free wild card certificate with your hosting? That will affect how the URLs are set up. General information can be found here, however: http://www.shopsite.com/help/10.1/en-US ... rvice.html

As long as you have configured Authorize.net in the ShopStie backoffice Commerce Setup > Payment and you have configured the proper secure urls under Preferences > Hosting service then contact to authorize.new should go through port 443 wich is the default secure port. If this isn't working then perhaps your host has port 443 blocked.

The only screens for a shopper that need to be secure are the Checkout screen where they enter payment information, the Confirmation screen (if you have that enabled) and the Thank You screens. (Registrations screens will also be secure but they won't have anything to do with Authorize.net.)

In the Backofice of ShopSite the Orders screen will also be secure so you can view order information and bill orders (if needed).

There is no other setting that you would need to change other than those mentioned in the first paragraph above for this to work.

thanks jim. bluehost told me i'd need an ssl certificate. but first, i would need to make my site the main domain, not an add on. so i spent all day with tech support getting that taken care of. however afterwards, none of the buttons would work in shopsite. when clicked, a small box would pop up and ask what type of program i'd like to use to open the cgi file. so i uninstalled shopsite, and reinstalled. i still get the same error. in fact this time, when i click on the link in my confirmation email from shopsite, i don't even go anywhere, it just pops up that little box again and asks what type of program i'd like to use to open the cgi file.

The issue with SSL has nothing to do with ShopSite, It has to do with the server you are working on. Getting a different cart is not going to change that.

Though you could probably add an "s" to http:// for your cart pages. Web browsers will not see your site as being secure unless you have an SSL certificate and have properly set it up in ShopSite (or in whatever cart you use).

SSL for your domain is NOT required on some host

You should be able to use SS w/o an SSL cert for your domain. Pair.com can set it up to use their secure URL. Does not look as 'professional' but gets the job done. Considering low cost of SSL certs I would strongly recommend using one. Looks a lot better than shared SSL.
