Apple - firefox & Safari

Postby ibot » Mon Feb 22, 2010 5:13 pm

Im finding some apple machines using firefox & safari are having a issue displaying pages. The home page displays fine, however when they view a link page the browser displays HTML code? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
john

What is the URL to a page with the problem?
Have you run the html for the page through an html validator?

The url = www.shopibot.com.

We tried several sub-catagories - Computer, GPS, Headphones which all returned the same results, on two different machines.

Custom pages - Policy, shipping & returns, contacts, are working fine.

Thanks in advance,

Make sure that your page file names end with a valid extension such as .html, htm, php etc. I think your webserver is not displaying pages unless they have an appropriate extension.

That would make sense. Will make the changes, and verify. I really only use IE, so this was a lesson on usage.

Also I notice that the link you have for "Shopping Cart" in your navigation has the word "function" misspelled.
http://www.shopibot.com/cgi-bin/sc/orde ... ntion=show

it should be
http://www.shopibot.com/cgi-bin/sc/orde ... ction=show

The only reason it works is if there is no valid function name in the url the shopping cart is displayed.

Thats interesting, as the top Nav is Shopsite / App generated, and the bottom which is Custom is correct?

Looking in back office NAVIGATION, the Shopping Cart does not contain a URL. I believe Home, Shopping Cart, Register are all App generated.

I guess I could populate the URL accordingly?

Thanks in advance,

I'll log this as a problem and have it fixed for a future upgrade/release.

Another problem our designer pointed out is that you have links with commas and & characters in them. Those are reserved characters for URLs and should not be used in file names. For example
http://www.shopibot.com/Camera_&_photo.html
http://www.shopibot.com/Furniture,_stands_&_mounts.html
http://www.shopibot.com/Home_automation_&_security.html
and a number of others.

Also space characters should not be used in file names as not all browsers handle them properly.

I've made the changes for all page file names to contain extension .html

I'll check with my 2 customers who reported the issue, since I don't have Apple machines (firefox / safari).

As for the file names, they are being generated by an automated upload, and are associated to the pages / products from my supplier.

All contain underscores_ between spaces on the sever side which is valid on UNIX.

Thanks again for your feedback, and support.

I tried the site again and the links on the left side work fine for me now but the product more information links are broken on a number of products because they don't have the file name extension. For example on the page
http://www.shopibot.com/Computer_&_monitor_mounts.html
none of the image or product names which link to moreinformation pages work because they are lacking the .html

http://www.shopibot.com/products/4921017
http://www.shopibot.com/products/4909669
etc. should all have .html as the extension in order for them to display in firefox or safari.

I had to step out for a bit (kid’s soccer game...) however wanted to extend my appreciation on your great support. I've made the changes to the ‘more info page files’, and all appears to be working for my customers.

Thanks again,

john
