renaming pages after publishing

Postby down2earth » Wed Dec 23, 2009 8:57 am

I am using shopsite manager v10...I would like to rename my pages under the 'advanced info' section 'file name'.
For example, instead of the page posting page16.html I would like it to post graphic_tees.html.
Does the shopsite software automatically fix all the links within the store? My site is already up and running for a month, I am wondering if it is worth running the risk of potential broken links.
If it is easy, breezy then is it just as easy to rename my products from product37.html to greentee.html as well?
Thanks in advance for your input!

If you change the filename the next time you publish the store the links would be corrected to go to the appropriate page or product moreinfo page.

However, changing the filename will not remove the original file from your store output directory. To delete those files you could go in through ftp or telnet and remove the files that have page or product in the name like page15.html and product13.html .

Another way to do this would be do download your pages and products under Utilities > Database > Download . Then go to the pages screen and delete all of the pages and go to the products screen and delete the products which will delete the existing published pages. Then upload your pages and products again and fix the filenames before you publish. (NOTE: You should probably backup the database first just incase something goes wrong. If something does happen you could restore the backup.)

If your store hasn't been active too long this shouldn't do much to hurt search engine rankings but if you store has been around for a while the search engines will have the old pages indexed and it might lower your ranking.
