Paypal: Express checkout or Direct Payment API

Hello:

I wanted to setup Paypal as another payment method on our website. What I would like to do is include it in the dropdown of payment options.

The goal is to allow those with Paypal to use it as a payment method. (We've had a business account with Paypal for many years for use with our ebay auctions.)

Reading through the Shopsite literature I see there is a choice of either Express Checkout or Direct Payment API.

My question is, based on what we want as stated above, which would be the better choice to go with? Or, doesnt it matter.

Thanks

Tim

Express Checkout is best for what you are describing.

The PayPal Website Payments Pro Direct Payment API is a regular payment gateway option like Authorize.net, Linkpoint, and Payflow Pro. The shopper pays with their credit card on your site, the info is passed behind the scenes to PayPal to process. The shopper never even knows it is PayPal processing their order. To use this payment processor method you have to go through additional application processes with PayPal and there is a different fee schedule for payments that there is with the regular PayPal Standard or PayPal Express Checkout. Note that if you have the PayPal Website Payments Pro Direct Payment API processor enabled, you also MUST have PayPal Express Checkout enabled as well, this is a PayPal rule (I guess they don't want merchants to remove the PayPal-branded payment option once the switch to or add PayPal Website Payments Pro Direct Payment API).

Loren

Thanks for the info.

I set up the Express method. Everything seems ok with one exception. The payment selection appears on the cart page rather than the
Billing and Shipping Information page. (We use a custom cart).

I went to the cart_cont.html include and do see the shopping cart tag [-- SC_PaymentSelection --] within the cart form.

Before I start tinkering with the cart_cont.html page. Does the sc_paymentselection need to be on the cart page? (I am thinking that it does as it has to pass the contents of the cart or total to paypal.)

Or can it be placed in the Shipping/payment section? Currently we are using the SC_Payment tag on that page.

Thanks

Tim

If you enable PayPal Express Checkout (or PayPal Standard, or COD, or Check, or a Generic Payment Option, or WorldPay) then you must have the payment selection on the initial cart screen.

The only way not to have it there is if all of your enabled payment are all credit card types (that will all have the same fields on the checkout screen) or if you only have a single payment type selected (for example, you don't enable any credit cards, and you only enable PayPal, or you only enable COD, or whatever).

So it sounds like before you only had credit card types enabled so there was no reason to have the payment type selection on the first screen. Now, with PayPal Express Checkout enabled, there is.

Yes, the payment selection does need to be on the first shopping cart screen. However if you are only using one payment method then it will not be displayed. If you have more than one payment method then it will display.
