I would like to build a buy it now button that would send shopper directly to the shopping cart with both the item and the coupon attached.

Sorry, there is no way to add a coupon and a product to the cart simultaneously.

Theres got to be someone out there smarter than us that can figure this out... I mean it isn't rocket science.

I have talked to the engineer responsible for the code and there is no way that it can be done currently. It would require extensive rewrite of the shopping cart code to allow it.
