Upgrade from FreeBSD 4.x to 7.x and now SS is broken

Postby vpoptom » Tue Feb 26, 2008 12:19 am

Hi folks,

We made a rather large change in operating system version and while the storefront seems to work we cannot get the backend order management area to work.

Our version of SS is 4.2 and we had moved from FreeBSD 4.11 to 7.x. We do have the 4.x compatibility libraries installed.

The customer purchased the SS software 8 years ago so I don't think they have much in the way of information related to their version type (Pro, Manager?). Not sure how to find that info.

Are there new binaries that I can download and replace? Or is there a reasonable upgrade path from 4.2 to 9.x?

Thanks!

If you can add to cart and then see the shopping cart screen come up then it sounds like the binaries are good and perhaps you have a configuration/permission issue with the back office CGIs. I do note that FreeBSD v7 has not been officially released yet as a stable release (although it is close to being so.) Therefore there may indeed be some compatibility issues.

ShopSite v4.2 is indeed very, very old and upgrading to a newer version would be a good idea. The ShopSite upgrade is designed to go directly from at least v4.3 to the latest version. For v4.2 you may need to first upgrade to v4.3 or v5.x.

I'd suggestion contacting John here in Sales to see what your options are for upgrading or getting a support incident, or getting access to the v4.x binaries, etc. Contact information can be found here:

Thanks David. The system has worked fine for years. It's just this recent OS update that has caused portions of the system to cease working. Not sure what libraries were compiled against for the store (frontend) versus backend stuff (crypto stuff for the backend and not the frontend?).

Permissions are pretty straightforward on this system with executables being run as the user's UID and just needing the execute bit flipped. And proper perms to any of the writable locations. Triple checked that (and it would not have changed with this upgrade unless things had gone really badly).

The main backend scripts dump core when being run via the web but again, the frontend scripts run fine.

Any additional insights? Appreciate what you've offered so far!
