Adding Items to Categories

When adding a new item, with either the Basic or Advanced editor, their doesn't seem to be a way to assign that item to a page or category. It appears that I have to add the item, then go to the pages section and add that item to the page. Is that the case? That seems incredibly inefficient. WHat if you have 1000 products and you have to go through 1000 items to find the item you just created so you can add it to a page. I am new so maybe I am just missing something. Any help
